Business email compromise (BEC) is when a criminal accesses a work email account to trick someone into transferring money, or to steal valuable data. Commonly, BEC attacks are usually directed at senior staff or team members that can authorise financial transactions.

Analysis* in 2024 revealed that out of 1.8 billion emails globally, 208 million were malicious. Of these BEC scams accounted for 58% of phishing attempts and heavily relied on impersonating authority figures such as CEOs and IT staff, representing 89% of these attacks.
