Microsoft has reminded customers using Windows Server 2012 that it will no longer receive security updates, non-security updates, bug fixes, technical support, or online technical content updates as of the 10th of October 2023.
This means that any new vulnerabilities found on Windows Server 2012 will not be patched and may seriously impact the security or usability of servers running this version of the Windows operating system. Servers still using Windows Server 2012 will be more at risk of being attacked by threat actors as new vulnerabilities continue to be discovered.
If your organisation is still using servers running Windows Server 2012, it is highly recommended to update to a newer version as soon as possible. Microsoft has provided advice and options to customers looking to migrate to a newer operating system, which can be found here. If you wish to keep your on-premises Windows Server 2012 running and receiving bug fixes, Microsoft advises you to upgrade to Windows Server 2022 or purchase Extended Security Updates. Alternatively, customers can migrate their databases and applications to Azure Virtual Machines.
As older and outdated systems are easier to attack, threat actors often specifically look for systems with known vulnerabilities to target. Outdated systems can often be a weak point within a network and can lead to other devices being compromised. Because of this, it is highly recommended to update your Windows Server 2012 before it reaches the end of support in October 2023.
